Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Batter:

    • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.

    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs (or flax eggs), and vanilla extract.

    • Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

    • Fold in the chopped apples until evenly distributed.

  2. Heat the Oil:

    • In a deep skillet or heavy-bottomed pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 175°C (350°F ).

    • Test the oil temperature by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.

  3. Fry the Fritters:

    • Carefully drop large spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, avoiding overcrowding.

    • Fry the fritters for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

    • Use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate.

  4. Make the Glaze (Optional):

    • In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.

    • Drizzle the glaze over the warm fritters or dip each fritter into the glaze for a sweeter treat.

  5. Serve:

    • Serve the apple fritters warm, with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of glaze.

Enjoy your delicious, homemade apple fritters—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and bursting with apple flavor!

Chef Brooke Silk's Notes:

Apple fritters are a classic, easy-to-make treat that tastes best when served warm. For the perfect fritter, ensure your oil is at the right temperature to achieve a crispy outside and a soft, apple-filled inside. These fritters can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days and reheated in the oven to maintain their crispiness. For a vegan option, substitute the milk with plant-based milk and the eggs with flax eggs.

Served with a nice caramel sauce is delicious.
