A classic breakfast treat with a twist—this French toast recipe features slices of freshly made sourdough bread, giving it a unique, tangy flavour that perfectly complements the sweetness of maple syrup. Simple yet satisfying, this dish is perfect for a weekend brunch or a special breakfast in bed.
Ingredients:
4 slices of freshly made sourdough bread
2 large eggs
1/2 cup whole milk (or any milk of your choice)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
A pinch of salt
2 tablespoons butter
Maple syrup, for serving
Fresh berries, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Egg Mixture:
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
Dip the Bread:
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter.
Dip each slice of sourdough bread into the egg mixture, making sure to soak both sides well, but not too long to prevent it from becoming soggy.
Cook the French Toast:
Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet.
Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. If your skillet can accommodate, cook multiple slices at once, adding more butter as needed.
Serve:
Serve the French toast hot, drizzled with maple syrup.
Garnish with fresh berries or any other toppings of your choice.
Enjoy your delicious French toast!
Chef Brooke Silk's Notes:
Bread Choice: Freshly made sourdough bread adds a delightful tang and sturdy texture that holds up well to the egg mixture, making it ideal for French toast. If your sourdough is a day old, it might even soak up the mixture better.
Egg Mixture: For a richer flavor, you can substitute the milk with half-and-half or heavy cream. The pinch of cinnamon adds warmth, but you can skip it if you prefer a more classic flavor.
Cooking Tips: Cook the French toast over medium heat to ensure it cooks through without burning. If your slices are particularly thick, you might need to cook them a little longer at a lower heat.
Serving Suggestions: This French toast pairs beautifully with a dusting of powdered sugar, a dollop of whipped cream, or even a few slices of banana. For an indulgent touch, try adding a pat of butter on top just before serving.
Make it Your Own: Experiment with different types of bread or add-ins like orange zest to the egg mixture for a citrusy twist.
